Thoracic Surgery > Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Lung Volume Reduction Surgery This approach to treating emphysema was first used in the 1950’s but only recently physicians have begun using LVRS to help people with severely disabling emphysema. LVRS involves removing approximately 25% of the damaged lungs so that the remaining tissue and surrounding muscles are able to work more efficiently, making breathing easier. This surgery can be performed by video-assisted thoracic technique. |
